Nancy J. Lilley: A WHISPER AND A SIGH International Lullabies and Harmonies for Dreaming ages 0-3yrs (although many adults have bought it for their own listening pleasure)
A collection of lullabies by local artist Nancy J. Lilley. Traditional lullabies such as "Ho Ho Watanay"and "Fais Dodo Lola La Belle" are beautifully arranged and performed, combine with pieces such as
"The Mockingbird Shuffle", a fun original version of "Hush Little Baby", creating a CD of wonderful songs to lull a babe to sleep with. |

Special Thanks to...
Alex McKechnie Brock Davis Clare Elizabeth Morgan Kenton Weins Lesley
Scholton and The North Vancouver
Kids' Chorus ...for their invaluable contribution to this album.
A very special thanks to...the whispers and sighs of lullabies, as they helped me through the emotional upset caused by the terrorist tragedy of September
11th, 2001. So "To the U.S. Child" was born and this CD go its start.
And to the B.C. Guide Dogs Society for letting me train "Terry". He was only a puppy when I started this project. He listened to lullabies without complaining they were
putting him to sleep and he never made a whimper in the studio. Hope you're happy in your new home. Sage and Comet miss you.
And Leah, for her wisdom and strength. Forever will we be entwined. |

The Story of "A Whisper and a Sigh"
Shanna's Rock-a-Bye Lyrics written by Nancy J. Lilley Dec.2002 Music composed by
Tony Chotem, Jan.2003I wrote this lullaby to my daughter, Shanna Joan Rowan, when she was 5 months old. As someone who always wanted to be a mother and share in the wonderful intimacy that only a mother and baby can
understand, I wrote these lyrics revelling in the tenderness of rocking her to sleep. Then Tony got the idea to set it to a rock melody. Somehow the combination of the tenderness of the lyrics and the rock n' roll rhythm works.
Shanna's Rock-a-Bye was born. We felt it was the song that will capture a child's attention so it knows it's time to settle down, but not before having some fun! |

Fais Dodo Lola La Belle
31 sec MP3 Audio Sample (Go to Sleep, Lulal, My Darling)
Brittony Traditional Music and Lyrics Arrangement by Tony Chotem
This lullaby is well known in France, Belgium and Haiti and in this version it is sung to French words. With French being one of Canada's official
languages, I wanted to include a lullaby sung in French. Although a simple lullaby, this song was chosen for its' beautiful melody as well as because of my own Celtic heritage. |

Dreams of Harmony Lyrics and Music Composed by Joanne Hammil, JHO Music
Joanne Hammil sent me a copy of her cassette tape
and permission to use her song by mail. We have since communicated by phone and e-mail. Since this lullaby album was started the day of Sept. 11th, 2001 (by coincidence before the bombings), I thought it very fitting to give a world
perspective. I was very touched by this beautiful song that teaches "dreams of harmony" all over the globe and includes saying "good-night" in nine languages. |

A La
Nanita Nana 30 sec MP3 Audio Sample Traditional Spanish Lullaby
Arrangement by Tony Chotem This version is sung entirely in Spanish. I preferred the sound of the Spanish lyrics for this lullaby. The modulation from the major to the minor key is quite characteristic of many Spanish lullabies and my ear is drawn to this kind of key change. This one is hauntingly tender with its' curving melody and elaborate words. I was also drawn to it because of my childhood nickname, "Nanny-goat." My baby also first called me
"Nana" before she ever called me "Mama". Perhaps she was trying to imitate my husband calling me Nancy. |

The Bamboo Flute
29 sec MP3 Audio Sample Chinese Traditional Arrangement by Tony Chotem
This Chinese lullaby is sung
in this version entirely in English. After asking several of my Chinese friends what Chinese lullabies they sang to their children, they replied there weren't any they knew of. I thought this odd, considering how old Chinese culture is
and how many Chinese people reside in Vancouver and the rest of Canada. I was able to find this lovely little lullaby and wanted to share it with the Chinese community here in Canada. We were lucky enough to find a player and an actual
bamboo flute for her to play. |

A Shendandoah Lullaby Traditional American Arrangement by Tony Chotem
This song has long been a favourite of mine,
so I wanted to include it in my collection of International lullabies. Also my thoughts were with my American neighbours at the time of the terrorist attacks and I wanted to include a very traditional and well-known American song. With
the war in Iraq raging as I was about to record this song, my thoughts were also with the soldiers who are "bound away" from their families to fight and how they must miss things like the "wide Missouri River".
Ho Ho Watanay 30 sec MP3 Audio Sample
(Sleep Sleep Little One) Iroquois Indian Traditional Arrangement by Tony Chotem
As this lullaby comes from one of the most important of Canada's Indian tribes, I wanted to include it in this collection as an
example of traditional Canadian Indian heritage. The majority of the Canadian Iroquois live in the Province of Ontario, but there are many Iroquois Indians living int he U.S.A. as well. "Ho Ho Watanay" was collected by Alan Mills from the
Caughnawaugha Indian Reservation near Montreal in 1955, the year I was born. Tony grew up near this Reservation in Montreal. |

Leah (Entwined) Lyrics written by Nancy J. Lilley, June,2002 Music composed by Tony Chotem Arrangement by Tony
ChotemThis song was written for Leah at her request. A single copy was made and given to Leah as a gift. When I sang this heart-felt song live for Leah, her sister, and my husband, Todd, there
was not a dry eye in the place. In this version, the simplicity of the song is highlighted with the pairing of a harp. It makes for an angelic sounding lullaby. |

The Mockingbird Shuffle Lyrics written by Nancy J. Lilley, March 12, 2003
Music Traditional Appalachian Arrangement by Tony Chotem
This original version of "Hush Little Baby" or "Mockingbird" was included as a "funny" song and a as a wake-up call to the grown-up who might be falling asleep
to these lullabies as well. It is also a tribute to the adjustments parents must make to accommodate the arrival of a newborn. It was written with the intention of "Mama" and "Papa" competing for baby's attention and affection and then
both joining in harmony to finish singing a lullaby to their precious new little one together. The banter at the end of the song is merely for the amusement of the person left with the task of getting that baby into the crib after it's
asleep. |

To the U.S. Child
30 sec MP3 Audio Sample Lyrics written by Nancy J. Lilley, September 12, 2001 Music to Brahms' Lullaby written by Johannes
Brahms (1833-1897) Arrangement by Tony Chotem Includes: The North Vancouver Kids' Chorus
Written the day after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist tragedy in the U.S.A., this lullaby is meant as a tribute to
the surviving children who lost their parents that day, from the Canadian children who mourn their loss and who honestly care. It was the first song written for this lullaby CD and was the impetus for the entire project. It is ironic I
end up placing it second to last on this CD. This CD took on a life of its own and the placement of songs took a natural progression.

Sh Sh Shanna Lyrics written by Nancy J. Lilley, August, 2003 Spoken by
Nancy J. Lilley Sh Sh Sh-ing by Tony Chotem As the last song written for this lullaby CD it was decided to include it as a spoken piece without music. It is the last whisper before
the lullaby CD ends and your child's dreaming begins. I have challenged Tony to write music for it for the next Lullaby CD. I had been saying the lyrics "Sh Sh Shanna" over and over for many months, hoping to fill in the blanks. Shanna kept practicing her "Sh Sh's"
too because of this. Then one evening it all came to me in about one minute flat. If your precious little one isn't asleep after all the "Sh Sh Sh-ing" that goes on in this song-waiting-for-music, just play the CD again. Happy
daydreaming! |
